For the past two weeks I have been writing about the 5 most influential modern worship songs. To recap, I have written about Shout to the Lord, Heart of Worship, Lord, I Lift Your Name on High and Open the Eyes of My Heart. For the last entry I wanted to write about the most influential modern worship written in the past decade.
How Great is Our God was written by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and Ed Cash and was initially released on Tomlin's 2004 album Arriving. HGIOG won the 2006 GMA Dove Award for Song of the Year and Worship Song of the Year and then amazingly it won again for Worship Song of the Year in 2008. It is currently listed at number 1 on the CCLI top 100 and was number 2 on the past reporting.
How Great is Our God has been record by many artist including Chris Tomlin, Bethany Dillon, LaRue, Coffey Anderson, and recently Seventh Day Slumber. And Chris Tomlin has been referred to by Time Magazine as the most often sang artist anywhere. The Album Arriving was certified Gold in January of 2006 and was RIAA certified Platinum in 2008.
The simplicity of the song makes it a very easy song to play and sing. Chris Tomlin's said, "The Beauty of the song is that you hear it one time through and you have it." The powerful lyrics, How great is our God/Sing with me, How great is our God/ and all will see/How great, how great is our God, and the infectious melody became the anthem of churches all around the world. This is what made it one of the fasted rising songs on CCLI, a organization that tracks music used for congregational singing and videos shown in a church settings.
